Frequently Asked Questions About Buying a Mustang

What should I know before buying a Mustang?

A Mustang is not a horse breed - it is simply a horse with a unique history shaped by life in the wild. Before purchasing a Mustang, it's important to understand the commitment involved, including training, management, time investment, and long-term care. While Mustangs are known for their intelligence, resilience, and loyalty, they often require a thoughtful approach and a willingness to build trust at the horse's pace.

Can a wild horse be imported to Europe?

No. Before export, horses must complete the required training for handling, veterinary procedures, and documentation necessary for safe transport. By the time they arrive in Europe, they have already undergone foundational preparation and are considered former wild horses.

What is the difference between a wild horse and a former wild horse?

A wild horse has had little to no human handling and lives freely in its natural environment. A former wild horse has begun the transition into domestic life through basic handling and preparation. This process allows the horse to travel safely, receive veterinary care, and adapt to a future partnership with people while preserving many of the characteristics that make Mustangs unique.

How do I choose the right Mustang?

Choosing the right Mustang involves much more than selecting a horse based on appearance. Age, temperament, confidence level, training history, size, intended use, and compatibility with your experience all play an important role. The best match is one that fits your lifestyle, goals, and abilities while giving the horse the greatest opportunity for long-term success.

Through our pre-screening process, every horse is carefully evaluated before being presented to prospective owners. We help you make an informed decision based on the horse's personality, strengths, and suitability rather than relying solely on photos or videos.

Can I meet a Mustang before making a purchase?

Yes. In fact, meeting a Mustang in person is one of the most valuable parts of the journey.

Through our Wild Horsemanship Training Program at Rancho Terra Bravo in Portugal, many clients have the opportunity to meet and spend time with selected Mustangs before making a final commitment. This allows you to experience the horse beyond photos and videos, observe its personality, and begin building a genuine connection.

Before any horse is presented to you, it undergoes a careful pre-screening process to assess temperament, trainability, physical health, and suitability for life in Europe. Once a horse has been identified as a potential match, you can follow its progress through updates, videos, and personal consultations. Depending on timing and availability, you may also be able to meet the horse during one of our training programs in North America or at Rancho Terra Bravo in Portugal.

Our goal is not simply to help you purchase a horse - it's to help you find the right partner. That's why we encourage prospective owners to be actively involved in the selection process and, whenever possible, to meet their future Mustang before making a final decision.

At Rancho Terra Bravo, you'll not only have the chance to meet the horses but also experience our horse-centered training philosophy firsthand. This provides a unique opportunity to learn about Mustang behavior, handling, and training while determining whether a Mustang is the right fit for your goals, experience, and lifestyle.

Are Mustangs suitable for beginner riders?

Some Mustangs may be suitable for beginners, while others require more experienced handlers and riders. Every horse is an individual. Factors such as age, temperament, previous training, and personal confidence can influence suitability. Honest assessment and careful matching are essential to creating a safe and successful partnership.

Why shouldn't I buy a Mustang based only on photos?

Photos can show a horse's appearance, but they reveal very little about temperament, emotional resilience, trainability, or suitability for your goals. Professional pre-screening allows for a much more complete evaluation of the horse's physical condition, mindset, and readiness for export. This significantly reduces the risk of disappointment or an unsuitable match.

How long does it take to prepare a Mustang for Europe?

Most projects take approximately three to six months, although timelines vary depending on the individual horse. Preparation includes handling, training, veterinary care, export documentation, and transportation arrangements. The process should always move at a pace that supports the horse's mental and emotional well-being.

What training does a Mustang receive before export?

The focus is on foundation skills rather than performance training. Horses learn essential handling skills such as leading, haltering, hoof care, loading preparation, veterinary handling, and adapting to new environments. The goal is to create confidence, trust, and emotional stability before the horse begins its journey to Europe.

For clients who wish to continue learning alongside their horse, our training programs at Rancho Terra Bravo in Portugal offer the opportunity to deepen your understanding of Wild Horsemanship and develop your partnership under professional guidance.

Why are some Mustangs more successful than others?

Success is rarely determined by talent alone. The most successful partnerships are usually built on realistic expectations, appropriate matching, patient training, and a willingness to prioritize the horse's emotional development. A carefully selected Mustang with the right owner often thrives far beyond expectations.

Is owning a Mustang different from owning a domestic horse?

While many aspects of horse ownership remain the same, Mustangs often bring unique life experiences and perspectives. They can be exceptionally intelligent, observant, and sensitive to their environment. Owners who appreciate patience, relationship-based training, and continuous learning often find Mustang ownership to be one of the most rewarding experiences in horsemanship.

What if I'm not sure whether a Mustang is right for me?

That's completely normal. Best, you come visit Rancho Terra Bravo to meet and learn about Wild Horsemanship

being the right fit for you.  Part of my role is to help you determine whether a Mustang fits your goals, experience level, and lifestyle. In some cases, the right Mustang can be an extraordinary match. In others, a different type of horse may be the better choice.

Honest guidance is always more important than making a sale!
